Myanmar or Burma, officially the Union of Myanmar, is the largest country by geographical area in mainland Southeast Asia. The country is bordered by the People's Republic of China on the northeast, Laos on the east, Thailand on the southeast, Bangladesh on the west, and India on the northwest, with the Bay of Bengal to the southwest. One-third of Burma's total perimeter, 1,930 kilometers (1,199 mi), forms an uninterrupted coastline.  Burma is divided into 5 main regions.  The Irrawaddy consists of the lowlands of the Irrawaddy Delta and the largest city and former capital.   Central Myanmar features the historical and archaeological sites and cool hill towns, and Mandalay.  Western Myanmar is a remote mountainous region with some lovely beaches on the Bay of Bengal, Northeastern Myanmar is a huge, restless region which includes the infamous Golden Triangle and the southern reaches of the Himalayas, while the Southeastern region is the southern coastal stretch bordering Thailand with a vast number of offshore islands.
