SIC Departure: Daily
'I have seen other places like Sipadan, 45 years ago, but now no more.
Here we have found again an untouched piece of art...  a jewel'.
Jacques Cousteau, world-renowned oceanographer and celebrity diver.

One of the world’s richest marine biodiversity areas is located in the Celebes Sea just off the east coast of Malaysian Borneo and close to the borders of Indonesia and the Philippines. Malaysia’s once secluded diving haven, Sipadan Island, became famous when Jacques Cousteau visited and called the island “an untouched piece of art.”

The island is formed by living coral growing on top of a volcanic cone. Beneath the waters, patrolling hammerhead sharks, twirling tornados of barracudas and jacks, sea turtles swimming peacefully, and millions of colourful reef fish call the island their home. There are also undersea caves, turtle tombs, and a reef wall reaching down 600m. The island is covered in lush jungle which is home to tropical birds such as kingfishers, sea eagles, sunbirds, starlings, wood pigeons, along with fruit bats, and monitor lizards.

Mabul Island is just a 15-minute boat ride away. This small, oval-shaped island covered in tall palm trees is fringed with soft white sand and surrounded by turquoise waters. Unlike Sipadan Island, where there is no accommodation, most divers chose Mabul as their base. The fairly shallow waters and good visibility attract an abundance of tiny, exotic creatures. Frogfish the size of soccer balls in blue and black, many species of pipefish, purple and red fire gobies, Mandarin fish, ghost pipefish, many species of shrimp, wild and exotic sea urchins, crabs and lobsters are just some of the more common yet fascinating marine creatures found in the waters surrounding the island.

Sipadan is the only oceanic island in Malaysia, rising 2,000 feet or 600m from the seabed. It is located in the Celebes Seaeast of the major town of Tawau and off the coast of East Malaysiaon the Islandof Borneo. It was formed by living corals, growing on top of an extinct volcanic cone that took thousands of years to develop. Sipadan is located at the heart of the Indo-Pacific basin, the centre of one of the richest marine habitats in the world. More than 3,000 species of fish and hundreds of coral species have been classified in this ecosystem.

Mabul in contrast to Sipadan, is a continuation of the Borneolandmass rather than the top of an underwater mountain. Because of this, Mabul has more gradually sloping walls around it that bottom out at about 30m. The attractions on Mabul are of the smaller variety such as lobsters, crocodile fish, moray and pleasure garden eels. This makes it an ideal location for macro-photo opportunities.
