A small island of 65,610 square kms, Sri Lanka lays in the Indian Ocean, south of the coast, 880kms north of the Equator. Communication is rarely a problem because English is spoken in most parts of the country. Place names and signboards are in the national languages and often in English also. Official languages are Sinhala, Tamil and English.


Ethnic Groups  

Majority of population are Sinhalese 74%, Tamil 18% Muslims 7% and Burghers (descendants of Portuguese, Dutch and English colonists) and other 1%.



Buddhists 69%, Hindus 15% Christians 8% and Islam 8%

Being a tropical country, the low-lying coastal regions have a year round temperature of about 27C. Kandy averages 20 - 25C and Nuwara Eliya 10 - 20C. The hottest time is March to June and coolest, November to January. The southwest monsoon (May to July) affects the southern, western and central areas. The northwest monsoon (December to January) affects the eastern and northern areas.



240 volts, 50 cycle AC, a two round pin adaptor is useful.



Sri Lanka Rupee Bank notes are in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 and coins in Rupees 1, 2, 5 and cents 5, 10, 25, 50.  One USD equals approximately 107.50 Sri Lankan Rupees, at the current rate of exchange.



Distinctive Sri Lankan curries, Far Eastern dishes, seafood, Chinese meals, Malay food have to be sampled. Western style cuisine is also available everywhere. Fresh fruit is abundant and cheap.



You should be conservatively dressed and always remove footwear and hats before entering temples and places of worship.



It is customary to tip at restaurants. A 10% is considered a fair tip.

The world's finest tea and spices are grown here. Precious stones are good value and also atiks, silver trays, ornaments and Jewelry.



It is recommend that you drink only filtered water, mineral water and aerated waters which are available at all the hotels.



Festivals occur throughout the year. The most famous is the Kandy Perahara, the Festival of the August Full Moon at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic of Buddha, in the hill capital of Kandy.



Water sports such as Scuba diving, water-skiing, wind surfing, boating, sailing, swimming, snorkeling and fishing, golf, tennis and squash. Trekking, camping and fun rafting  are all available.











DAY 01:  Arrival / pickup up from airport and transfer to Colombo.  Overnight at the hotel in Colombo


DAY 02:  Breakfast.  Transfer to the Kandy. En route visit to Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage.  Evening site seeing at Kandy including a visit to the Temple of the tooth relic.  Late evening witness the Cultural Dance Performance.  Overnight at the hotel in Kandy


DAY 03:  Breakfast.  Morning visit Peradeniya Botanical Gardens.  Afternoon free.  Overnight at the hotel in Kandy.


DAY 04:  Breakfast.  Morning proceed to Nuwara Eliya.  En route visit a tea factory / Plantation. Upon reaching Nuwara Eliya, site seeing tour of the city.  Overnight at the Hotel in Nuwara Eliya


DAY 05:  Breakfast.  Transfer to Colombo via Kithulgala.  A chance to do white water rafting (Optional).  Afternoon transfer to the airport for your return flight
