For anyone who loves leisure and local culture, a visit to North Western Yunnan is a must. The province’s three main attractions are the towns of Dali, Lijiang and Shangri-La. Dali City is the economic and cultural center of the Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture marked by the well preserved buildings found in its Old Town. Surrounded by mountains and holding Erhai Lake in the center, the 25 ethnic groups living here have created a unique cultural heritage among picturesque surroundings. Farther north, at the gateway to the Tibetan Plateau, the scenery, lush vegetation, and cultural diversity of Lijiang are stunning. In Lijiang you will find the world’s oldest hieroglyphic script still in use, and one of the few functioning matriarchic societies. Following the Tiger Leaping Gorge towards the north, you will come to Shangri-La, named after a mystical Eastern “heaven on Earth”. It is marked by a dominant Tibetan population and an idyllic setting that earned its name.
